Master License Service has moved to the Department of Revenue

The Master License Service (MLS) is now the Business Licensing Service (BLS) at the Department of Revenue.

What is the Business Licensing Service?

It’s the “all-in-one” business licensing service for Washington State and about 40 participating cities. The program provides a one-stop service for starting a new business, registering as an employer, and performing a wide variety of other business licensing tasks.

Has the website moved, too?

Yes, all BLS information and online services are now available at business.wa.gov/BLS. Please be sure to update your bookmarks and favorites.

Can I visit a business licensing office if I need to?

Yes. To find an office near you, see Business licensing office locations at the BLS website.

Should I still go to the Department of Licensing for my professional license?

Yes, we continue to issue, renew, and regulate professional licenses. Only the Master License Service has moved.

What’s the reason for the change?

The legislature directed the move as part of efforts to integrate and streamline most business licensing functions within the Department of Revenue. Substitute House Bill 2017 passed with broad support from lawmakers, interest groups, and both agencies. The move supports ongoing goals to streamline processes to help businesses conveniently get services from state and city government.
