Small DOL data backup device missing

OLYMPIA—A small data backup device in use at the Department of Licensing’s Poulsbo Driver Licensing Office early in September is missing.

The missing device was used to temporarily back up data for recent transactions on the workstation in case of computer system problems. It held a small amount of customer data including names, addresses, and pictures, but not highly sensitive personal information like Social Security numbers, birth dates, or driving history information. DOL is continuing to investigate the disappearance of the device and has eliminated the use of this type of storage device in our offices.

"While the use of external storage devices on our workstations was considered low-risk when we started using them, I directed our information technology division to immediately stop using them," Luce said. "A more secure alternative will now be used."

This issue involves only one workstation located within the Poulsbo licensing office. DOL has identified and told all the individuals that may be affected.

Letters explaining this issue were sent to about 2,200 citizens that had a transaction processed on the affected workstation around the time when the storage device was lost. There was a limited amount of information on the storage device and the information was in a format that would be difficult to use.

The lost data does not include Social Security numbers, birth dates or any other information considered useful to identity thieves.

"We always take this issue very seriously, whether or not sensitive information like Social Security numbers are involved. We will do everything we can to inform and help citizens that may be impacted," DOL Director Liz Luce said.

DOL has set up a special toll-free telephone number affected citizens can use to get more information about this incident and help with watching their credit reports for signs of fraud.
