Training school resources: Change ownership of a training school

Things to know

  • If the school is a testing location, please contact us for the process to change ownership.
  • Cost: $500 application fee (non-refundable)
  • You must apply within 10 days of purchasing an existing school from current owner.
  • Allow 4 weeks for processing. You will be able to operate using the current license during this time.

Steps to apply

  1. File a Business License Application with the Department of Revenue.
  2. Submit a Driver Training School License Application.
  3. Pay a $500 application fee (non-refundable) - Check/money order payable to Department of Licensing. Include the following:
    • Copy of the business purchase agreement for school
    • Copy of lease for school premises
    • Proof of insurance for school premises that includes the street address for the school
    • Proof of insurance for vehicle(s)
    • Copy of all vehicle registrations
    • A packet for each non-instructor employee and/or owner, see staff certificate
    • If Instructors are already licensed, send in a list of all instructors
    • Curriculum forms:
      • Policy
      • Student record
      • Behind the Wheel form
      • Flow chart
      • Final test and answers
  4. Mail documents and fees to:

    PO Box 3097
    Seattle, WA 98124-3907

After we've received your application

  • Allow at least 4 weeks for processing.
  • If you haven't received your license after 4 weeks, please contact us.
  • The school can operate under the current license while the application is processing.
  • An auditor will contact you to schedule an inspection of your school and vehicles.

Post your license

  • We will mail your license after you've met all the requirements.
  • Post all applicable licenses at your place of business before you start instructing students.
