Frequently asked questions

Is there a fee to take an exam?

Yes, you must pay exam application fees, which vary depending on the type of exam. In addition, all applicants who are approved to take a test (except those taking the Forest Engineering or Structural III exam) must pay a fee to Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Services (ELSES, LLC), to cover the cost of preparing, administering, and grading the exams.

Note: Once you receive a letter from us approving you to take the exam, you must register with ELSES by their deadline.

What is the deadline for applying for an exam?

You must submit your application with the appropriate fee 4 months before the exam date.

What is the deadline for rescheduling an exam?

The reschedule deadline is one month after the application deadline. You may ask to take the next exam by sending us a written request with the rescheduling fee. If you originally applied to take the exam within the last 5 years, you do not need to submit a new application to reschedule your exam.

Are study guides available to help me prepare for an exam?

You may purchase study guides for most exams on the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) website.

The eighth edition of the Fundamentals of Engineering Supplied-Reference Handbook, which was published by NCEES in November 2007, will be available beginning with the April 2008 exam. The new edition includes the exam specification and an updated index to improve usability. Using this edition to prepare for the April 2008 exam will help you become familiar with the new format, and may make it easier to find information when taking the exam. You may download the handbook free of charge or purchase a bound copy online from the NCEES website.
