Exam: Funeral directors

Required exams

To get a funeral director license, you must pass both of the following exams:

  • Washington State Laws, Rules, and Regulations Exam
  • Funeral Arts Exam

You won't be required to take the Funeral Arts section of the exam if you have passed the National Board Exam with an average score of 75% or better or have passed another state's Funeral Arts Exam.

Exam schedule

Exams are administered through the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards (ICFSEB). The ICFSEB will schedule you to take the exam after we approve your application and notify them you're eligible.

How to apply to take the exam

Mail all of the following to the address on the application form:

  • A completed Funeral Director/Embalmer License Application.
  • A check or money order for the application fee, payable to the Washington State Treasurer.
  • Your official college, university, or mortuary school transcripts. Photocopies aren't acceptable.
  • An official copy of your National Board scores (if applicable), sent directly to us from the National Board.
  • Verification from the state board of each state where you have been licensed (if applicable).

When we finish reviewing your application, we will notify the ICFSEB you are eligible to take an exam.
