How to renew your license: Real estate brokers

Things to know

  • You can still mail applications and forms or use our online services where available.

When to renew

Your license expires every 2 years. You can renew online or by mail.

How to renew online

  1. Login to online renewal
  2. Certify your required continuing education
  3. Pay with a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express credit or debit card
  4. Print the final confirmation screen for your records when you’re finished. You’ll get your license in the mail.

If it has been 6 years since your last fingerprint submission, submit fingerprints for state and national background checks.

  • Inside Washington: Go to www.identogo.com to schedule an appointment through MorphoTrust, our electronic fingerprinting vendor. You will pay IdentoGO for taking your fingerprints and for the background checks required for your license type.
  • Outside Washington: Call Real Estate Regulatory at 360.664.6484 for fingerprint card submission instructions.

How to renew by mail

  1. Submit all of the following:
    • Certify on your renewal notice by signing that you have completed all the required continuing education.
    • A check or money order for the fee (payable to the Department of Licensing).
  2. Mail your renewal documents and fee to:

  3. If it has been 6 years since your last fingerprint submission, submit fingerprints for state and national background checks.

If you didn’t get a renewal notice, or have misplaced it, complete a Real Estate License Renewal Application, and mail it to us as described above.

Continuing education requirements

When you renew your broker’s license, you must certify on your renewal notice by signing that you have completed all the required continuing education:

Type of renewal Required continuing education
First active renewal
  • 30–hour Advanced Practices Course
  • 30–hour Real Estate Law Course
  • 30 hours of approved continuing education, including a 3–hour Core Course
  • The hours must be started after the date of first licensure.
Subsequent active renewals
  • 30 hours of approved continuing education, including a 3–hour Core Course
  • A minimum of 15 hours must be completed within 24 months of your renewal date. You may also use up to 15 hours of unused continuing education that was completed within 48 months of your renewal date.
Inactive renewals

No continuing education required to renew an inactive license.

If you want to activate your license, you may need to meet the education requirements for an active license.
