Who can get another person’s driving record

Because driving records are confidential documents, only the individuals or companies listed for each type of record below can request a copy of another person’s driving record.

Fees

All driving records are $10 each. You may pay the fee:

  • by check or money order if submitting your request by mail.
  • OR
  • by cash, check, or money order if requesting a copy of your own record in person.

How to get another person’s driving record

The process depends on the type of record you want. The steps for requesting a copy of a driving record are listed with each type of record below. For more information about driving records, please see Frequently asked questions.

Complete record

  • An attorney representing a driver may get a copy of that driver’s record by mailing us the fee with ONE of the following:
    • A Adobe PDF iconDriving Record Request completed and signed by the driver, including the address where the driving record should be mailed.
    • OR
    • A letter on the law firm’s letterhead, indicating that they represent the driver and including the driver’s full name, date of birth, and mailing address.
  • Law, justice, and other government agencies may receive a driving record by mailing us a request.

Insurance abstracts (3-year noncommercial, 3-year commercial, and life insurance)

An insurance company or their agent may request a driving record by mailing us the fee with ONE of the following:

  • A Adobe PDF iconDriving Record Request completed and signed by the driver, including the address where the driving record should be mailed..
  • OR
  • A letter on the insurance agency’s letterhead that includes:
    • the individual’s Washington driver license number OR the individual’s full name (including middle name or initial) and date of birth.
    • AND
    • the purpose for requesting the driving record (commercial, noncommercial, or life insurance).

Employment record

An employer, prospective employer, or their agent may request a driving record by mailing us the fee with a Adobe PDF iconDriving Record Request completed and signed by the driver, including the address where the driving record should be mailed..

Volunteer vanpool driver record

An employee or agent of a transit authority may request a driving record by mailing us the fee with a Adobe PDF iconDriving Record Request completed and signed by the driver, including the address where the driving record should be mailed.

Volunteer for organization driver record

A volunteer organization may request a driving record by mailing us the fee with a Adobe PDF iconDriving Record Request completed and signed by the driver, including the address where the driving record should be mailed.

School bus driver record

A school district may request a driving record by mailing us the fee with a Adobe PDF iconDriving Record Request completed and signed by the driver, including the address where the driving record should be mailed.
