1. Find out who can request a new plate design

To request a new plate, your organization must:

2. Design the plate and gather the supporting materials you'll need

3. Apply for your special plate

  • Email all of the items above to SpPlateUnit@dol.wa.gov.
  • Send a check or money order for the $6,100 startup fees (payable to the Department of Licensing) to:
    Department of Licensing
    PO Box 9035
    Olympia WA 98507–9035

If the legislature approves 6 or more new plates for 2017, we’ll need to charge each approved organization an additional $32,000. We’re only able to process 5 new specialty plates in a year, any number above that and the work will have to be done by a vendor. We’ll let you know if that applies to your situation.

  • Make sure you keep copies of the materials you submit.
  • We’ll review the materials once we've received everything and let you, and your legislative sponsor, know if you've been approved or not.
  • Your start up fees will be held until legislative approval of the plate occurs. If the plate isn’t approved within 3 years, the start up fees will be refunded.

4. Introduce the bill with your legislative sponsor

  • Once you've been approved, you'll need to discuss introducing the bill with your legislative sponsor.
