University of Washington plates


  • Any Washington State vehicle owner can buy University of Washington license plates.
  • These plates may be transferred from vehicle to vehicle as long as the registered owner remains the same.

How to apply

  1. Complete a Special License Plate Application.
  2. Contact a vehicle licensing office to find out how much your plates will cost, including all licensing and service fees.
  3. Submit your completed application and fees:
    • At a vehicle licensing office.
    • or
    • By mail to:

Remember to update your Good To Go! account

If you have a Good To Go! electronic tolling pass, be sure to update the license plate number and contact information on your account if you get a new special plate. You can update your account with the Department of Transportation:

There are no special requirements for renewing University of Washington license plates. You can:

Replacing your UW plates?

If your plates had… Your replacement plates will have…
The “W” logo (purple or gold background) The current UW design
The Husky dog logo
  • If you get a new plate number, the current UW design.
  • If you keep the same plate number, the Husky dog logo design (the number format won’t work on the current design).


To get original plates:

  • Cars and trucks: $67.75
  • Motorcycles: $49.75
  • Trailers: Not available

To renew:

$30 special plate fee plus your tab renewal fees (Tab renewal fees vary by location and type of vehicle.)


  • $28 of fees go to support University of Washington.
  • Fees listed don’t include the cost of vehicle registration or tab renewal. Some offices may charge an additional service fee.
