How to renew your license: Security guards
Things to know
- License expires every year.
- You can renew 120 days before your license expires.
What you'll need
- A SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account to apply online.
- If you don't have one, you'll be able to create one before you start.
- For help visit How to set up account access.
- Supporting documents ready to upload for legal background questions if applicable.
How to renew
Private security guard company
Before you renew
You'll need to renew the company license and the associated principal/qualifying agent license.
You can renew online or by mail.
Online
Create or use your SAW account to renew and pay your fees online.
By mail
Send the following:
- Completed Private Security Guard Company License Renewal Application.
- Check or money order for the exam fee (payable to the Department of Licensing).

Unarmed or armed private security guard
You can renew online.
Online
- Prepare your documents for upload, if applicable.
- Create or use your SAW account to renew and pay your fees online.
Temporary registration cards aren't to be used for guards with expired licenses.
Certified trainer endorsement
The endorsement renewal fee is an additional $15 plus your unarmed or armed security guard renewal fee.
You can renew by mail.
By mail
Send the following:
- Completed Security Guard Renewal Application.
- Supporting documents for legal background questions, if applicable
- Check or money order for the exam fee (payable to the Department of Licensing).
