Military experience waiver

Things to know

  • If you drove trucks in the military, you may be able to get a CDL without having to take a skills test or provide a training certificate. Knowledge tests can't be waived.
  • You can't get a passenger or school bus endorsement under this waiver. You must complete a skills test and submit a training certificate.
  • A CDL is not allowed an indefinite military expiration. The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 383.73(b) (9)) doesn't allow expirations beyond 8 years.

Who Qualifies?

Military drivers who are:

  • Currently active
  • or
  • Within 12 months of having a honorable discharge, and
  • have 2 or more years of driving commercial vehicles as part of your military job, and
  • meet all requirements on the Application For Military Skills Test Waiver.

How to apply

Take the Application For Military Skills Test Waiver to your Commanding Officer to complete and sign.

Visit a driver licensing office location to complete knowledge testing. Bring the following:
